What about me and real estate?
Only at the age of 45 did I make a living. After all, there are so many trails I didn't hike, so many rivers I didn't hike, music I didn't play, so much to experience and learn. When I was living in the rat race of work from 8am to 7pm in high-tech, there was no way I could taste and fulfill a particle of all dreams. I knew that if I waited until my retirement age to make the change, I would get exhausted there, with "the tongue out," even if no one could assure me that I would get there.
Only at the age of 45 did I realize that life is now. Why then? All kinds of simple things happened, the children had grown up and suddenly I met myself there, still feeling like a child only with wrinkles and return hair. Call it a mid-life crisis or just slander, not that a career and a job is a bad thing, I've had many years of satisfying work and internet entrepreneurship. But I felt exhausted and empty of them. The stress, the traffic jams, the endless coping with guilt about neglecting home and family for the career. 3 children and a dog, a house in a community with a garden, circles, 2 cars, seemingly a success but an endless pit of money and expectations that need to be fulfilled. I repressed the voice that told me that if one lives only once then one must find balance and sanity, for me it was a New Age cliche.
Every day last year, I began to miss life in the US that marked my freedom. Me and the US had a long affair already. I married in Philadelphia with Cheryl at 23, studied political science and economics at Temple University in the city and worked there. The big girl was born there and after about 6 years we decided to move to Israel.
It is said that every crisis has an opportunity. I found my way to a more sane and happier life through the US real estate crisis. Realizing that the crisis was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I raised a large portion of my savings and funds that were bored at the bank with single growth rates at best, helped with courage and bought the first investment home and actually started a condo in Colorado. Later I scrapped more money for more investments, leveraged the investment for more and more homes and properties. North Carolina, FL, Philadelphia I skipped because I was skeptical of my intimate sales that the city could rise. A mistake of course, the city has surged forward and in the midst of an impressive upheaval today. Eventually we also started investing in Philly which was my home in the past.
When the real estate business started to gain momentum and our little daughter was already in high school, I informed my partners at the Content House (Digital Content Programmer) about early retirement, we sold the house in the country and did a U-turn back in the US, after 20 years, to concentrate on full-time investment . We searched and found a home in New Hope, Pennsylvania a picturesque town on the banks of the Delaware River we loved, with a great high school for little ones, bike trails and kayak tracks, Jamjam music clubs with them with my guitar and more.
At the same time we began to invest with all our energy. At first he went really well, immediately came friends and friends of friends who wanted to even then we opened the Around the Block Projects. Later on, we went into some tough flip adventures that showed us the maddening side of the business. Details later this week.
Fast Forward 4 years, the little one at university, our company helps dozens of investors from Israel and abroad to do what I did for myself and my family. I make sure to work hard but not too hard, play in 2 cars, in the summer my kayak is fixed on the roof of the car and I enjoy everything America has to offer. Smart investments in real estate, even if not everything goes smoothly, allow me and my investors to build a portfolio with some breathing space to enjoy life itself. Happy Holidays to you too.
