Policy change:
The "corona procedures" that all apartment owners must be familiar with
Apartments will remain empty for 24 hours when one tenant leaves and one new one enters. Beyond that, a recommendation was published for cleaning and disinfection of the property, but the company explained that this is not an obligation. However, in the near future you will allow tenants to see if the property owners are following the recommendation.
The corona plague has caused the tourism industry to be almost completely wiped out, but the international rental site Airbnb has ordered a long line of guidelines and measures, apparently in preparation for a possible return to routine.
Nearly 7 million homes, apartments, rooms and more are currently on the Airbnb site, and from now on apartment owners will be required to make sure the property stays empty for 24 hours, from the moment one guest finishes staying at the place until the next guest enters. The company explained that this decision was made based on the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and more specifically "in order to address the possibility that the virus is transmitted through respiratory droplets that may remain in the air for many hours."
The company also announced new cleaning procedures, in what was defined as "the first system of procedures for cleaning and disinfection in the industry." It is worth explaining that these procedures are not mandatory, but a recommendation of the most effective forms of cleaning and detergents. On the other hand, compliance with these procedures may mean that the landlord will not have to leave the apartment empty for 24 hours between tenants.
"We will not oblige homeowners to do so, but we encourage them to adopt the guidelines," Airbnb said, adding that in the near future tenants will be able to see if property owners are following the recommendation.
As mentioned, the tourism industry has suffered a considerable economic blow in light of the crisis. According to the analytics company STR, in the week ending April 18, the average occupancy rate in US hotels was only 23.4%. It is estimated that the impact on Airbnb is the same, at least. However, it is important to note that Airbnb is a private company, and therefore It does not disclose occupancy rates.
Earlier this month, Airbnb announced that it had received a $ 250 billion loan from a number of investors, with the aim of helping the company overcome the corona crisis. At the same time, it has allowed many customers to cancel planned bookings, while setting up a $ XNUMX million fund to help homeowners affected by the plague.
