Opinion | Jerry Seinfeld: So You Think New York Is 'Dead'

Jerry Seinald claims Manhattan will remain Manhattan

what do you think?

When I got my first apartment in Manhattan in the hot summer of 1976, there was no peddlers' law, and the streets were covered in dog nonsense.

I signed the lease, got out and my car was towed. I still thought, "This is the biggest place I've had in my life."

Manhattan is an island off the coast of America. Are we part of the United States? Type of. And this is one of the hardest times we have had in quite some time.

But one thing I know for sure: the last thing we need in the thick of so many challenges is some beating and whining on LinkedIn, "Everyone's gone! I want 2019 back!"

Oh, shut up. Imagine being in a real war with this guy by your side.

Listening to him go, "I was playing chess all day. I could meet people. I could start any kind of business." Wipe your tears, wipe your butt and pull it out to each other.

He says he knows people who have left New York for Maine, Vermont, Tennessee, and Indiana. I have been to all these places many, many, many times over many decades. And with all due respect and affection, are you… laughing .. me ?!

He says everyone is gone forever. How the hell do you know that? You moved to Miami. Yes, I also have a place on Long Island. But I will never abandon New York. Ever.

And I've been on stage at your comedy club Stand Up NY quite a few times. It can use a little adolescent, if you do not mind saying. I would not worry. You can do it from Miami.

There is something else silly in the article about "bandwidth" and how New York ends because everyone "distances everything". Guess what: everyone hates doing it. Each. Hate.

you know why? No energy.

Energy, attitude and personality cannot be "remote" through even the best optical fiber lines. That's all the reason many of us moved to New York in the first place.

Have you ever wondered why Silicon Valley even exists? I always wondered, why do all these people live and work in this place? They have all this crazy technology; Why does not everyone just spread out where they want to be and connect to their devices? Because it does not work, that's why.

True, living and inspiring human energy exists when we come together in crazy places like New York City. Pitying yourself because you can not go to the theater for a while is not the essential character element that made New York the brilliant activity diamond where it will one day be again.

Did you find a place in Florida? Fine. We know the sharp focus and the restless and resilient creative spirit that Florida is engaged in. Do you think Rome is also going to die? London? Tokyo? The eastern village?

they are not. They change. They change. They are re-created. Because greatness is rare. And the real big one that is New York City is beyond rare.

It is unknown. Not known anywhere outside of New York City.

You say New York will not happen this time.

You will not jump back. In your new and loving and pastel life in Florida. I hope you have a long and healthy run down there. I can not think of a more appropriate reward for your fine article.

This stupid virus will eventually give up. In the same way you have.

We will continue with New York if it's okay with you. And it's certain that in hell he will return.

Because of all the real and tough New Yorkers who are unlike you, loved it and understood it, stayed and rebuilt it.

See you at the club.
