Amazon is advancing with construction and recruitment at HQ2

Amazon is releasing new updates and photos of the construction phase at Metropolitan Park in Washington DC.

Construction is underway in Metropolitan Park, the first phase of Amazon's second headquarters in Arlington.
More than 3,500 Amazon employees are now assigned to HQ2, and more than 2,500 technical and non-technical positions are open. In addition, Amazon has donated more than $ 30 million to local charities, community groups and small businesses, including La Cocina and Bridges to Independence, since announcing that Arlington will be home to HQ2 three years ago.

These commitments are in addition to Amazon’s announcement of the establishment of the Amazon Housing Equity Fund, which has pledged more than $ 500 million in low-interest loans and grants to create or preserve up to 2,300 affordable homes in the HQ2 area to date.

As the project progresses, commitment to the community remains a priority. Met Park includes two 22-story office buildings, more than 50,000 square feet of retail space for small local businesses, and a public park of more than 2 acres for the benefit of the entire community.

Construction at Met Park began in early 2020 under strict health and safety guidelines, and Amazon will complete the project in 2023.
In total, the construction project is more than 2.1 million square feet.
More than 100 local contractors are working on the project.
More than 3,000 skilled craftsmen specializing in fields including electricity, machinery, concrete and carpentry contributed more than 1.4 million hours to the project.
Met Park includes:

Two 22-story office buildings.
More than 50,000 square feet of retail space for small local businesses.
A public park on an area of 2 dunams for the enjoyment of the entire community.
The project needs 937 door frames, which if stacked, will equate to the height of 12 Washington monuments.
Upon completion, the project will include 200,000 cubic feet of concrete, which is enough to fill Lincoln's binocular memory pool six times.

Environment

Met Park will be bird-friendly thanks to non-reflective glazing throughout the building and safety glass for birds at the lower levels facing the park.

Met Park will play an important role in meeting Amazon's climate commitment to reach zero carbon zero by 2040, 10 years before the Paris Climate Agreement. It also helps Amazon move forward further to run its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 - five years earlier than the original 2030 target, with all development powered by energy generated at a new 120-megawatt solar farm built in Pittsburgh, Virginia.
As part of this commitment, the project is on track to achieve the following goals:
20% energy savings below the baseline of the American Association of Heating, Cooling and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
50% saving in water under the building code thanks to low flow water bodies and use of captured and treated rainwater and gray water for rinsing bodies and cooling tower.
75% reduction in carbon emissions in building operations through the use of renewable energy, a central plant that is all electric and high-performance systems that reduce Met Park's energy demand.
Reducing the carbon footprint of concrete structures by using low-carbon mixtures and incorporating CarbonCure, a process that puts recycled carbon dioxide into fresh concrete to reduce its carbon footprint without compromising performance.
84% of all construction materials have been dumped so far, including concrete, drywall, metals, wood, cardboard and plastic.

Amazon prioritizes small, women-owned and minority-owned local businesses to fill 50,000 square feet of retail space in Met Park, including designated daycare space.
The first two retailers to sign leases at Met Park are District Dogs, a full-service pet grooming company, and RĀKO Coffee, a specialty coffee and cocktail café.
Half a mile of protected bike trails will be incorporated into Met Park.
The 2-dunam park inside the Met Park site will be open for public enjoyment.
