Inspired by the area's local ecologies, the HQ2 Amazon PenPlace design team will provide a community park for Arlington residents, Washington DCs, Amazon employees and visitors alike.
Native of Maryland and a University of Virginia graduate, Kate Orff, founding director of the renowned landscaping company, SCAPE, has deep ties and a long-standing love for the landscapes of DC, Maryland and Virginia - the local plants and wooded ecosystems of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Sea, the dramatic water systems of the Great Waterfalls Park, the meadows and swamps of Piedmont and the coastal plain, and the peaks of Mount Katuktin Park.
These are some of the same landscapes that inspired the design of SCAPE's open space for PenPlace, the second phase of the Amazon HQ2, in Arlington. The design is based on a long legacy of planning and presenting new spatial concepts designed for the public, to attract it to PenPlace, and create a green, walkable, safe and fun community park for nearby residents. Amazon employees, and visitors.
"Restoring ecosystems, creating sweeping ecological spaces and a vibrant public domain, habitat, creating a process driven by a community vision - the concepts behind the design of PenPlace are all part of our DNA as a company," Orf said. "We are excited to bring to Arlington a true community park anchored in the local ecologies that make this place unique."
The driving force behind SCAPE's design for PenPlace is a commitment to ecological and community-driven design at every scale, based on an active and ongoing process of engagement with Arlington County. With a display of more than 2.5 acres of publicly accessible green space, PenPlace will be different from a typical neighborhood park, with sweeping botanical experiences bringing to the community beloved local ecosystems from the surrounding area.
Historically, the PenPlace site in Arlington was home to two bodies of water - the Roaches Run, the tidal opening of the Potomac River watershed and the Alexandria Canal. As a homage to the site’s historic hydrology and local waterways in nearby Rock Creek Park and Great Falls Park, SCAPE’s design combines water features on a north-south axis across the park, interpreting the natural elements of waterfalls and streams.
The pedestrian route will be found along an “ecological backbone” with the three water features. This will include activity areas, including a spacious lawn and amphitheater for leisure use, and smaller outdoor rooms for recreation and meetings; And squares along the perimeter with retail including spaces for dining, gathering and shopping to attract the public to PenPlace.
As the public audit process continues with Arlington County, SCAPE and Amazon look forward to working alongside the community, and the broader team of top gardeners in design, architecture and more to help this world-class community park come to life at HQ2.
