God-Lake Placid Most people know exists in the Adirondack area of upstate New York, but there is actually another Lake Placid in Florida. It was voted the most interesting city in America by Reader's Digest, and many would argue that it continues to hold that title. Although not entirely tied to its northern Olympic twin, Lake Placid, Florida, Is a town worthy of recognition for a number of reasons.
It is located directly in the center of Florida's wing, but although it is not close to the ocean, it is home to 29 huge freshwater lakes. The town itself is also rich in culture, history, vineyards and festivals, which gives it a vibrant atmosphere that is worth experiencing in person.
The history of Lake Placid in Florida is just as interesting as the town itself. It was founded in 1925 and was first known for the citrus trees that surrounded it. However, it is better known for being the former home of Dewey's decimal system creator, Dr. Melville Dewey.

While Dr. Dewey owned land in what was originally known as Lake Stearns, Florida, he also had a hand in establishing the Lake Placid Club in upstate New York. He was responsible for Lake Stearns eventually becoming Florida's Placid Lake. Thus, the story of two Lake Placid is linked through the creator of Dewey's decimal system.
While this is Lake Placid, Florida's claim to fame, it's certainly not the only reason people continue to visit the most interesting town in America.

Lake Placid was surrounded by orange groves that stretched for miles and gave the whole town a citrus scent. Today, oranges are still part of its heritage, but they are only one attraction in this town like orange-flavored ice cream, do not miss!
One of the first things visitors will notice as they walk around Lake Placid is its stunning murals. The town has a reputation for art, and much of it can be seen for free by strolling downtown. Whether it's looking at the playful mural that adorns the building in the home of Toby the Clown Ltd., or whether it's history in the form of art alongside retail or urban buildings.
One of the biggest attractions of Lake Placid and the Seabring area in the summer is the Caldium Festival. According to Florida Backroads Travel Lake Placid produces about 90% of the world's cladium flowers. In order to pay homage to its historically fertile land and the fields of the cladium, a festival is held every year in July. 
Of course, no trip to Lake Placid, Florida, is complete without a trip to one of its 29 freshwater lakes. Visitors can expect a wide range of water recreation, including but not limited to fishing (with appropriate permits), swimming, jet skiing, boating, kayaking and more.
