For the first time: Florida has more jobs than New York
With more Americans moving to low-tax areas, there are now more workers in the Sunshine State.
Florida isn't just for retirees anymore.
For the first time in at least 40 years, there are more jobs in the Sunshine State than in New York, part of a trend of Americans fleeing south to cheaper states.
Florida ended 2022 with 9,578,500 nonfarm jobs, while New York had 9,576,100, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It was the first time in the 1982 data that Florida had more workers than New York.
"Florida is no longer God's waiting room," said Craig Studnicki, CEO of ISG World, a real estate company specializing in luxury residential developments in South Florida. "We attract businesses and young people to come from all over the country because of our low taxes and warm weather."
The job gap between New York and Florida has been narrowing for years as Americans move south to states with lower taxes. But the pandemic has hit the job market particularly hard in Manhattan and elsewhere across the Empire State, while Florida is increasingly attracting tech and finance workers.
