History of Placid Lake, Florida
The town was originally called Lake Stearns and was founded in 1925. It was the center of citrus.

Dr. Melville Dewey, the inventor of Dewey's decimal system, bought many areas in the area.

His system is still in use in countless thousands of libraries to manage book collections. He also invented a simple way of spelling that he never caught.
Dewey was the founder of the Lake Placid Club in New York, and persuaded the town and state to go along with the name change of Lake Stearns to Lake Placid.
