Going to make an offer on a new house – how do I make sure its built well?

I currently live in the US and am going to make an offer on a
new construction house. I am not familiar enough with the terms /
process here. I’m working through a real estate agent but would
like to get anther advice since this is very stressful and I feel
that the agent has interest in closing the deal.
My concern is that I don’t know how in the process I make sure
that I am buying a house that was built with the right materials,
that is properly insulated etc.
I am told by my agent that after signing there’s a process of
inspection and appraisal. Would inspection really figure out if the
construction level is, for example, on par with what’s acceptable
in the area? How would I know that the builder did not choose the
cheapest materials, cheapest insulation or that he built the house
in a way that does not conform to our local laws or anything risky
of that sort? The missing piece here – who is the trusted advisor
in the process that will help me understand that, and what can I do
in case the house is indeed, for example, built from poor
materials?
Also – if I do find out that this is the case – what do I do? It
seems that I would need to put an initial deposit in an escrow a
few days after signing, so inspection and appraisal would only
happen after that.
I personally don’t have the knowledge to know if the house is
properly built. Thanks in advance.
