California Finalizes Mandate on Rooftop Solar
California has become the first state in the nation to adopt a solar power mandate for new homes. The California Building Standards Commission signed off on the requirement this last week. It goes into effect on January 1st, 2020.
Regulators have been working on the rules for several years. They say the results of an in-depth analysis shows solar would be cost-effective in all parts of the state. They’ve also received input from the public and other stakeholders such as homebuilders, solar companies, utilities, and the lighting industry. According to their analysis, the solar requirement will add about $40 onto a monthly mortgage, but will save about $80 a month for utilities. That results in a net savings of about $40 a month or $500 a year.
Greentech Media estimates, the first year of compliance will put solar equipment on about 74,000 new single-family homes, and another 56,000 multi-family homes. This is certainly big news for the solar industry, which is expected to surge in California when that mandate kicks in. (3)
