How does a #university expand?
Columbia University in the City of New York, my alma mater, is in the midst of the largest #building boom in its 265-year history. This current expansion is focused on Manhattanville, a 6.8M square foot new campus at 125th Street in Manhattan, north of the main Morningside campus and south of the medical school campus.
Master-planned by RENZO PIANO BUILDING WORKSHOP, it has been 16 years in the making and will continue to unfold for decades to come. It is estimated to cost $6.3B.
The firm's designs for the buildings in the first phase are a gem of new collegiate architecture, weaving together three primary uses:
(1) Science – world class #research facilities, with a special focus on neuroscience
(2) Arts – diverse performance, screening and presentation spaces for the entire university, in addition to a home for the university #art gallery
(3) Gathering – open-air and enclosed spaces to break barriers between areas of study and between the university and the #community around it
So, what do you think?

Someone once told me that bcz Manhattan is a primary market ,a university expansion won’t effect the student/faculty housing nearby due to ease of transportation to and from the city ?
